Definition & Function

A keyless bushing is a device that connects a shaft to a hub through an interference fit, and is widely used across various rotating machinery. Its primary advantage is delivering a secure shaft-to-component connection without keyways or conventional bolts—raising both assembly efficiency and joint reliability.


Application Scenarios

On industrial production lines—such as conveyor belts and transfer systems—keyless bushings ensure stable operation of drive components.

They are well suited to high-speed, heavy-load environments, including wind power generation and mining machinery.


2. Working Principle


Basic Principle

A keyless bushing generates radial pressure through the interference between its inner and outer rings, creating tight contact between the inner ring and the shaft, and between the outer ring and the hub. This pressure is sufficient to resist operating torque and axial forces, preventing any slip at the joint.


Physical Changes During Installation

During mounting, the bushing is pressed or driven into its predetermined position using dedicated tooling. The material between the inner and outer rings undergoes controlled plastic deformation. As deformation completes, friction between the bushing, shaft, and hub increases—establishing a rigid, backlash-free mechanical connection.


3. Selection Guide


Material Choice

Different applications demand different bushing materials—commonly carbon steel or stainless steel—to suit varying environments and media. Correct material selection, accounting for corrosion resistance and strength, is critical to maximizing service life.


Sizing

The bushing specification must be calculated precisely from the shaft diameter and hub bore. The interference must be moderate: enough to provide adequate clamping force, yet not so great as to damage the mating components. Using the manufacturer's dimension tables or dedicated selection software helps avoid costly errors.


4. Installation & Maintenance


Installation Steps

Preparation – Clean the shaft and hub surfaces thoroughly; ensure no oil, rust, or other contaminants remain.

Positioning – Place the bushing on the shaft at its preset location and confirm correct alignment.

Pressing/Driving – Seat the bushing using the recommended pressing force and proper tooling.

Routine Maintenance


Periodically check the bushing's fastening condition to prevent loosening that could lead to safety incidents.

Monitor for abnormal wear or damage, and replace aged bushings promptly.

Under special conditions—high temperature, corrosive atmospheres—increase inspection frequency and apply appropriate protective measures.


5. Common Issues & Solutions


Difficult Installation

If fitting proves difficult, first verify that the shaft and hub meet specified dimensional tolerances. A light application of lubricant can reduce mounting resistance, but all residue must be completely removed after installation.


Loosening

Loosening may indicate that the required interference was not achieved during installation, or that operating conditions exceed the design envelope. Re-evaluate the installation parameters and, if necessary, upgrade to a larger bushing specification.
